My Thoughts About "The Secret"
I am sure many of you have at least heard of "The Secret", watched the DVD or read the book. Just in case you haven't heard about it, the "Secret" is about the law of attraction. It's about how we attract into our lives what we think and feel about. I ordered the DVD a little over a year ago and have watched it numerous times. Each time I watch it, I gain a better understanding of how this can work in my own life. One of the things they teach is to be in a feeling of gratitude for the things you already have. A few years ago, someone gave me a gratitude journal as a gift. It's just been sitting on a bookshelf ever since. I started writing in it and acknowledging all the things, even the smallest things, that I am grateful for. I thought I had so little, but I was amazed to see how quickly things came to mind as soon as I started writing them down. Another thing they stress is learning how to visualize already having what it is that you want to achieve. This has been very difficult for me to do. So many doubts and worries enter my mind as I try to envision being in a place I want to be or having the things I want to have. Then, one day it occurred to me that I had already done this as a child! When I was very young, we had a huge sweet gum tree in our yard with very large roots. I used to walk on the roots and it would take exactly ten steps to go completely around the tree. We were pretty poor and lived out in the country. I would walk around this tree for hours, stepping in the exact same spot on the exact same roots and imagine all the things I wanted in my life. I would visualize having a nicer home, the kind of car I would have when I was old enough to drive and how I would go shopping with my friends. I would be so lost in my imagination, I would lose track of time. The exciting thing is that in just a few years, all those things came to pass! It probably sounds silly, but in those days, those dreams seemed very far away from me. My point is that, by having this childhood memory, I now understand how this visualization process works. It is kind of sad, that as we grow older, we sometimes lose touch with our imagination and creativity, our hopes and dreams. We get so caught up in life and it's problems that we can't even relax and just imagine something better. For me, the "Secret" has reminded me of that moment in time when I could lose myself in my own imagination. This is so important to me as an artist. So, when I have a problem trying to visualize something better, I just remember that little girl walking around the sweet gum tree is still somewhere within me. |

I considered The Secret to be an affirmation that one might or might not bring into being through one's own actions. Now you've shown me to think of it in a sweeter, different way. Thanks.
I have seen the principles of the secret working in my life many times.
